  • Upon acceptance to Monty Tech, all incoming freshmen will be required to take a placement test in the spring. We recognize that incoming students have had diverse learning experiences prior to coming to Monty Tech.  Since we are a school district that welcomes students from approximately 45 different public and private middle schools as well as home school, these placement tests allow us to measure each student’s academic preparedness based upon specific standards and, in turn, helps us to determine each student’s academic placement for required courses in English, math, science, and social studies. During the month of August, student schedules will be mailed home.  Courses will be selected based upon the results of placement testing, sending school recommendations, selections made during the application process, middle school transcripts, MCAS scores, and any transition team meeting decisions (IEP/504).  Students should do their best on placement testing to help determine the appropriate class levels for their core classes. Please note that while placement testing has a direct impact on incoming freshmen schedules, it has no impact on a student’s acceptance into Monty Tech.

    Test Design

Reading Comprehension & Writing Test:  The reading comprehension test is used as a method of reviewing each student’s ability to read and understand fiction and nonfiction texts.  Reading comprehension will be assessed using a variety of excerpts.  Topics may include literature, science and/or history.   In addition, the writing portion will provide an opportunity for students to show understanding of topic development and standard English conventions.  Once the testing is completed, student results will be evaluated and students will be placed into English 9 or English 9 (pre-AP).  Upon review, students who do not meet grade-level expectations may qualify for additional support in another English course that focuses on building their literacy skills to meet high school readiness.

Mathematics Test: The math test includes a combination of basic math and algebra skills. Once the testing is completed, student results will be evaluated and students will be placed into Algebra I or Algebra 2 (honors).  Upon review, students who do not meet grade-level expectations may qualify for additional support in another math course that focuses on building their mathematical skills to meet high school readiness.

    Title I Support

Students may also qualify for additional reading and math support.  Students can choose to take an elective course entitled Writing Lab or Math Lab.  These courses provide additional practice in core skill development in preparation for the MCAS.  If your student has demonstrated a need for this support, it will be listed as a Writing Lab or Math Lab on your his/her schedule. We encourage you to support your student's enrollment in this course in order to better prepare him/her for the MCAS.  Further communication about the Title I program will follow throughout the school year.

    Freshmen Electives

With regard to elective classes, your student reviewed our offerings and selected potential electives for this year with our Dean of Admissions during the interview process.    We will be working to include these choices in the final scheduling process this summer.   You can also read more about our course offerings in our Program of Studies at https://www.montytech.net/domain/4274.  Currently, we offer the following courses for freshmen students, pending class sizes and student interest.
