Cooperative Education Profile: Veterinary Science
Monty Tech is proud to have a vibrant cooperative education program. Cooperative work placements allow juniors and seniors to earn wages while applying their vocational learning in real-world work environments. This spring, one of our veterinary science students is completing a co-op at VCA Lancaster Animal Hospital. Mabel Matheson, a junior from Hubbardston, is thrilled about her placement.
"My co-op is more than I could have asked for, with so many opportunities each week. I'm able to give injections, learn different medical software, work with different people, and gain an understanding of how different technicians run their day."
Matheson came to Monty Tech specifically to pursue this pathway. She explains, "I was interested in the veterinary science program the second I heard Monty Tech was beginning a program. I knew I wanted to work in this field and knew the program would provide hands-on experience that I wouldn't otherwise have had."
Hospital manager Bree Walsh supervises Matheson at VCA Lancaster. Walsh also appreciates the value of cooperative education. "Students learn not only hands-on technical skills in an actual working hospital, but also the soft skills necessary to succeed in this field. They get a feel for whether this is the path they want to take in life, which is invaluable!"
Many students who complete co-op placements will enter the workforce immediately upon graduation. Others, like Matheson, intend to pursue further education. Matheson hopes to attend a four-year undergraduate program in animal science followed by veterinary school.
When asked about her Monty Tech experience and her guidance for younger students, Matheson offers, "Make connections with your instructors because they can help you get into the field you're interested in."
